What is Group Therapy, and How Does It Work?

What is Group Therapy?
In Group Therapy, individuals join together with a licensed clinician to work collaboratively on their goals. Some groups are structured and educational, while other groups focus on support and processing. Groups are usually comprised of about 8-10 members and meet weekly for 1 hour. Group therapy can take place in-person or virtually. Group Counseling is a great addition to Individual Counseling!
What Should I Expect from Group Therapy?
In early group therapy, the facilitator will share about the specific group expectations and format. In psychoeducational groups, the facilitator will provide education on specific types of therapy skills, techniques for managing symptoms, and mental health recovery. In “process groups” the facilitator will encourage individuals to share about their experiences so that group members can feel heard and can provide support to each other. At Mind, Body, and Soul, most groups meet weekly for about six weeks. Throughout those six weeks, you will receive information about the group topic, new skills, and support from others going through similar experiences. How Does Group Therapy Help?
Research shows that group therapy is as effective as individual therapy, and even provides some benefits that are not found in individual therapy. Many of the benefits specific to group therapy are related to learning from other group members, feeling less alone in your situation, learning through socialization, and gaining hope through seeing others thrive.
