What Is Group Therapy

What is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a form of counseling where a small group of individuals (usually 5–10 people) meets with a licensed therapist to explore challenges, develop coping skills, and build connections. Sessions are typically 60–90 minutes and meet weekly or biweekly.

Benefits of Group Therapy

  • Learn new coping skills efficiently

  • Feel supported by others with shared experiences

  • Gain perspective by hearing others’ stories

  • Develop social skills and reduce isolation

  • Receive structure and guidance from a licensed professional

How is Group Therapy Different from a Support Group?

Unlike support groups, group therapy is facilitated by a licensed therapist who provides structure, therapeutic interventions, and education to help participants create meaningful change.
